Former African footballer Yaya Toure speaking in a recent interview explained that Manchester City manager Pep Guadriola must be supported by all of the team as the Spaniard risks being sacked if the team doesn’t win big in the new season
The Citizens reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in Guardiola’s first season but finished disappointing third in the premier league with London clubs Tottenham and eventual winners Chelsea ahead of them.
Guardiola replaced Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad last summer and expected to bring instant success to the club but failed to win any trophies and Toure has warned that there must not be a repeat of a trophyless campaign.
“We need to start the season quickly now, you know,” the Ivorian said.
“It’s the same for the players and the manager. If we don’t win something then we will be removed very quickly. City is now a club that has to win something every year.
“I don’t want to say how many trophies but it’s important we win something.”
Toure was almost forced out of Manchester City last season following the rift between his agent Dimitri Seluk and Guardiola but the former Barcelona star managed to worked his way back into the first team and even earned himself a 12-month extension in June.
The 34-year-old revealed: “I’m not thinking about what happened before. I’m just happy to play.
“In the last three or four years I have always dealt with the doubts about my future.
“People have been close to writing me off but I was not close to leaving. I was delighted to stay for one more year.
“We all have to do our jobs through the ups and downs.
‘It’s more about the team reacting well, being more positive and more clinical. I’ve proved that I want to win. In the last two years we’ve not been able to win too many trophies and it’s been quite difficult.
“So this year we have to do something because most of the teams in the Premier League have a lot of money and are strong.
“They can buy big players. We’ve seen this with United, so it’s going to be very tough.
“Of course, I’m looking forward to the season. I don’t know what is going to happen but we have to show better quality.”
